Can I be honest with you for a moment? There have been seasons in my life where getting out of bed felt like an act of bravery. Where the phone call I needed to make, the conversation I needed to have, or the step of faith I needed to take felt absolutely enormous — even terrifying. Maybe you know that feeling too. The shaking knees, the racing heart, the voice in your head whispering, “What if this goes wrong?” If that’s where you are today, I want you to know something important: God has never once asked us to be fearless. But He has called every single one of us to be courageous.
Courage Was Never About Being Unafraid
We do ourselves a disservice when we imagine that the heroes of scripture walked through their greatest moments without a trace of fear. Joshua was stepping into the sandals of Moses — one of the most towering figures in all of Israel’s history — when God spoke these words to him:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Notice that God didn’t say, “Don’t feel afraid.” He said, “Do not be frightened” — meaning, don’t let fear have the final word. Don’t let it sit in the driver’s seat of your life. The command to be courageous implies there is something to overcome in the first place. Real courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s choosing to move forward in faith despite that fear, because you trust the One who goes with you.
The Source of Our Courage Is a Person, Not a Principle
Here’s where Christian courage is completely different from what the world offers. The world says, “Dig deep. Believe in yourself. You’ve got this.” And while self-confidence has its place, it will eventually run dry. Our courage doesn’t come from a motivational quote or a good night’s sleep — it comes from a living, present, all-powerful God.
The Apostle Paul understood this deeply, writing from a prison cell of all places:
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
And when fear gripped the hearts of the early disciples, Jesus didn’t hand them a self-help strategy. He gave them Himself:
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” — John 14:27
This is the foundation of everything. When we are rooted in our relationship with Jesus Christ, courage becomes less about mustering something from within and more about receiving something from above.
What Courageous Faith Looks Like in Everyday Life
Biblical courage isn’t reserved for martyrs and missionaries. It shows up in the quiet, ordinary moments of your daily life — and it’s just as holy there. Here’s what it can look like practically:
Speaking truth in love when it would be so much easier to stay quiet. Courage means having that hard conversation with a friend, a family member, or a coworker — with gentleness and grace, but without compromise.
Trusting God with your future when the path ahead is completely unclear. As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Choosing faith over fear in the waiting seasons. Sometimes the most courageous thing you can do is simply hold on — to keep praying, keep believing, and keep showing up even when you haven’t seen the breakthrough yet.
Stepping into your calling even when you feel completely unqualified. Remember, God doesn’t call the equipped — He equips the called.
You Were Made for More Than Playing It Safe
Friend, a life lived entirely within the comfort zone is a life that never fully discovers what God placed inside of you. The same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead lives inside every believer (Romans 8:11). That is not a small thing. You carry resurrection power. And the God who parted the Red Sea, who shut the mouths of lions, who turned a shepherd boy into a king — that same God is writing your story.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to feel ready. You just have to take the next step, and trust that He is already there waiting for you on the other side of your fear.
So take a breath. Square your shoulders. And step forward — not because you’re not afraid, but because you know exactly Whose hand is holding yours.
You were made for courageous living. Don’t let fear talk you out of the life God designed for you.

A Prayer for Courage:
Jehovah, Jesus Christ, Holy Michael — we come before You with honest hearts. We confess that fear gets loud sometimes, and we don’t always feel brave. But today we choose to put our trust in You rather than our feelings. Strengthen us to take the steps You’ve called us to take. Remind us that we are never alone, that Your presence goes with us into every uncertain place. Replace our anxiety with Your peace, and our hesitation with holy boldness. May our courage point others back to You, the One who makes all things possible. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
